Upazila introduction:
Meherpur is the smallest district in Bangladesh. Although the smallest in size, Ezela has a glorious history and tradition. It is a border district of Bangladesh. Ezela consists of three upazilas of which Meherpur Sadar is the second largest upazila. Meherpur Sadar Upazila is situated between 23040 north latitude and 23052 north latitude and between 60 34 east longitude and 60 48 east longitude. Meherpur Sadar Upazila is bounded on the north by Gangni Upazila and India, on the south by Mujibnagar Upazila, on the east by Gangni Upazila and Chuadanga District and on the west by India. As the British East India Company gained the civil rights of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa in 1855, the river Tathameherpur came under the rule of the English Baniyas. Nadia was made a district in 18 AD. In 1857, Meherpur was established as a subdivision of Nadia district with 5 police stations of Meherpur Sadar, Karimpur, Gangni Tehtar and Chapramot. After the partition of the country on 14 August 1947, Meherpur was transformed into a subdivision of only two police stations. After independence, on 24 February 1974, Meherpur was recognized as an independent district. At that time Meherpur Sadar and Gangni were the only two upazilas in the district. Later on 24th February 2000, Meherpur Sadar Upazila was divided and Mujibnagar Upazila was created.
